Hospital staff ‘Runs for the Ride’ in marathon event
18 days ago | 266 views | 0 | 1 | | Laura Hughes and Meggie Gifford, Registered Nurses at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, and Megan Porter, Radiation Therapist at the JCMH Campus of the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma, are running in the Deer Creek Canyon 10K race on Oct. 4, one of the race events of the 4th annual Spirit of Survival Marathon at Lake Elmer Thomas Recreational Area. The marathon events benefit the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma in Altus, Lawton and Duncan.
As the three are running in the event, they are also raising money for the cancer center's "Run for the Ride" program to purchase a vehicle to provide transportation for cancer patients. Staff of the third-floor nursing unit at JCMH are contributing on behalf of Hughes and Gifford and cancer center staff are supporting Porter.
Lane Hooton is the Chief Operating Officer of the three Cancer Centers. He explains, "The Run for the Ride program will provide needed transportation for those cancer patients who have no means of traveling to their cancer treatment appointments. Many patients become weak while receiving treatment, and driving can become an obstacle to them. That's why our cancer centers want to make the difference for these patients."
Once the vehicle is purchased, volunteer drivers will be trained through the American Cancer Society.
Individuals can contribute to the "Run for the Ride" program without participating in a marathon event. Contributions may be taken to the JCMH campus of the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma at 1200 East Broadway in Altus or online donations can be made by visiting the Spirit of Survival website at www.spiritofsurvival.com. For information about the program, call the JCMH campus of the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma at 480-4400.
The Spirit of Survival Marathon weekend is October 3 and 4 at the Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. You can view all the events and happenings on the Spirit of Survival website.
