It was 88 yrs ago this month that Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle; a big silent movie star, was accused of the rape and murder of a woman named Virginia Rappe. The prosecution did a pretty good smear job on the poor man and the newspapers printed all kinds of inaccurate information and sometimes downright lies for the sake of selling papers. The man was tried three times, two with the jury voting ten to two to aquit and the third time the man was found innocent with a written apology issued by the jurors who had heard the evidence. But, alas, the poor man's career was ruined. This one event led to the enactment of the Hay's act which led to all kinds of morality clauses in the Hollywood environment. In fact, it was the Hay's act which resulted in the poor man being banned from the movie industry for a long time.
