O.k. I was reading my news headlines today and saw that some of the restrictions on stem cell research have been lifted. I am not saying that this is all the President's doing because even our former President George Bush allowed some form of stem cell research to be done. However, I did read the National Health Organizations definition of stem cell research and it seems that the stem cells of fetus' are prefered because at the younger stages, they have not yet differentiated into specific cells. Therefore, they have a more broader range of use. I then attempted to find the ethical considerations listed for this type of research, the National Health Organization did not want to get themselves involved in the ethical debate, but did list some sites that would. But I found it interesting that these sites did not immediately list the ethics of it, they had other links and a brief statement that really said much about it at all, just some contact us info. What it seems to come down to, and I am open to correction on this point, is that the neccesary cells must come from a living being, an I'm sorry, but I do consider a fetus to be a living being because the end result is a baby. It is just plain ridiculous to state that just because it wasn't allowed to complete it's gestation that it is not alive. I realize that a lot of people are placing their hope in research that would fix the things that went wrong with their body or the body of someone they love. You can't expect these people to sit back and lose hope, they feel how they feel for a reason. But my question is, at what price are they obtaining the result they want? Adult stem cells are available for research, but they are not in question in this debate. I would have to do a little research on this one. Are you going to say that we can go to any extreme to advance medical science? Are we going to realisticly cure every possible disease that man can contract, every birth defect that can occur, are we going to be able to reverse all the horrible things that can happen to a body such as paralysis or the ill effects of drug abuse. Are we going to be able to promise that all people will be born healthy, never get sick, never have to deal with the unfortunate things that can happen in life?
NO this is not something that we can ever promise. Working in the health care field I can tell you that for all the things we are sure that we know, there are still a million other things that we don't. I'm just not convinced, nor will I ever be convinced that it is right to sacrifice or experiment on a living thing that has not been allowed to make the choice. One last thought, how many people will be willing to sell their unborn fetus' to research centers for this use. Before you say I am going way out on a limb for this one, think about it. It is not totally out of the realm of possiblity that it can happen, the supply has to come from somewhere, and yes I realize that they can work with and develope an already exsisting supply of stem cell lines. I would look foward to replies on this as I am very open to the opinion of others> if you can correct or educate me further, I will listen... hugheslaurae@yahoo.com
